The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) announced on Thursday that its official X account has been taken over by an unauthorized user operating as @ephesus_lib, who has been posting cryptocurrency‑related messages. NHRC’s Director of Corporate Affairs & External Linkages, Fatimah Agwai, said the commission does not authorise, endorse or take responsibility for any content from the compromised account and urged the public to disregard such messages until control is restored. A Premium Times check on Friday morning confirmed the account, which has about 12,000 followers, was still sharing crypto posts and that the NHRC’s official logo had been replaced.

The breach matters because the account’s reach could be used to spread scams, malware or false information to a sizable audience, undermining trust in a government institution. It follows a similar incident on 15 August when the Defence Headquarters’ X account was flooded with crypto‑related posts, showing that official social media profiles are frequent targets for hackers seeking financial gain or to distribute malicious content.

The NHRC said it is working to reclaim control and will inform the public and its partners through its verified and established communication channels once an official medium on X is available. In the meantime, users should exercise caution, ignore any suspicious posts from the account and verify information through the NHRC’s website or other official channels. Will you double‑check any crypto offers purporting to come from NHRC’s X account before acting, or rely on other verified sources for updates?
