NICASA demands investigation into killing of Nigerian bishop in Johannesburg
The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has called for an urgent investigation into the killing of 58-year-old Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, who was shot more than seven times at his Kensington, Johannesburg residence on Friday, September 4, 2026. Two suspects gained access to his home and opened fire, according to NICASA. Fakunle, an indigene of Iye in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was pronounced dead at the scene. NICASA’s National President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, described the killing as a horrific and senseless act of violence and urged the South African Police Service to conduct a thorough, credible probe that identifies and prosecutes the perpetrators. The association said it has alerted the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg and confirmed that a murder case has been opened at Jeppe Police Station. NICASA also urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and let authorities handle the investigation, stressing that justice must be pursued through lawful channels.
