Niger Junta Regains Control of Base 101 After Midnight Mutiny Clashes in Niamey
Niger's military junta said it gradually regained control after mutinous soldiers clashed with presidential guard and Russian-allied forces around Niamey's presidential palace, state television (Tele Sahel), and Air Force Base 101 starting around midnight Saturday. By evening, junta forces recaptured Base 101 within the international airport complex, killing some mutineers, while state TV was restored after being off-air for over an hour.
The clashes underscore fragility of Niger's three-year junta rule under General Abdourahamane Tiani as it battles jihadist violence in the west. Base 101 serves as headquarters for Russia's Africa Corps and command for the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—of which Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali are members—making it a strategic asset. Jihadist groups IS Sahel and JNIM recently targeted Niamey airport in January and June, adding to regional instability as Sahel juntas pivot from Western to Russian security partners.
