The Federal Government has commiserated with the governments and peoples of South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe following the loss of lives in recent floods. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed sympathy for the human and material losses, noting concern over secondary humanitarian impacts like food insecurity, disease outbreaks, and the heightened vulnerability of women, children, and other at-risk populations. Nigeria expressed solidarity with ongoing rescue, evacuation, and relief efforts by national authorities, regional institutions, and international partners, acknowledging the resilience of the affected countries as they respond and begin recovery. The government also expressed concern over the growing threat posed by climate-related extreme weather events across Africa, reiterating the importance of strengthened regional cooperation, early-warning systems, climate adaptation strategies, and sustained international support. Nigeria assured the affected countries of its continued goodwill and support, reaffirming its commitment to cooperation at bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels in promoting disaster preparedness, humanitarian response, and climate resilience. South Africa declared a national disaster after widespread flooding destroyed homes and killed dozens, with the floods reportedly claiming over 100 lives as of Friday and displacing thousands across parts of Southern Africa. Weeks of torrential rainfall have left entire communities cut off, with residents fearing further alerts from weather services. The floods have overwhelmed rivers, damaged roads and bridges, displaced large populations, and disrupted agricultural production and essential services.
