Nigeria faces repeated fatal helicopter crashes, raising safety alarms
Nigeria has recorded multiple fatal helicopter crashes in recent years, involving offshore operations, military missions and prominent business figures. In October 2024, an East Wind Aviation Sikorsky SK76 carrying six passengers and two crew crashed into the Atlantic near Bonny Finima in Rivers State, killing all eight on board while en route from Port Harcourt to the NUIM ANTAN oil facility. NIMASA later recovered over 80% of the wreckage, including flight and cockpit voice recorders. In February 2024, former Access Holdings Group CEO Herbert Wigwe, his wife Doreen, son Chizi and former Nigerian Exchange Group chairman Abimbola Ogunbanjo were among six killed when a helicopter went down in California, United States. Earlier, a 2024 offshore crash claimed eight lives, and in August 2023 a Nigerian Air Force MI-171 crashed during a casualty evacuation mission in Niger State, with the Air Force investigating the cause.
