Nigeria lithium find and Africa mining summit boost local value addition
The African Natural Resources and Energy Investment Summit has brought together government officials, investors, financiers and industry stakeholders from across the continent to discuss mining, energy development, infrastructure financing and investment opportunities. At the event, a Nigerian mining company announced the discovery of lithium and tantalite occurrences at its site, with total mineral resources estimated at 94.8 million metric tonnes. This includes about 3.3 million metric tonnes of lithium reserves and roughly 91.4 million metric tonnes of granitic rock. The company said it processes lithium ore locally before export, in line with federal policies aimed at adding value to raw minerals within Nigeria.
This development matters because lithium is a key component for batteries used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, positioning Nigeria to benefit from the global clean‑energy transition. Local processing aligns with the government’s push for value addition, which could create jobs, attract foreign direct investment and increase export earnings from higher‑value products.
For readers, the news signals emerging opportunities in the lithium sector — whether as an investor, a job seeker in mining or processing, or a policymaker watching how value‑addition policies unfold. Monitoring government incentives and the progress of local processing projects could reveal where the next opportunities lie.
