Nigeria: MTN, Airtel gain as Glo loses and T2 subscriber data stalls
MTN and Airtel are gaining ground in Nigeria’s telecom market while Glo loses subscribers and T2 Mobile’s data appears stuck due to a reporting failure. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) listed T2’s subscriber base at 802,534 for April, May and June 2026—identical figures because the operator failed to submit updated reports, citing technical challenges. However, number porting data shows 73 subscribers moved to T2 and 1,897 left for other networks, a net loss of 1,824, suggesting the true base is shifting. Glo’s subscriber count rose 7.8% from April to May but fell 7.3% in June, erasing its earlier gain. Meanwhile, MTN’s active mobile internet subscribers grew 0.68% between April and June, and Airtel recorded a stronger 2.81% increase over the same period, including a 1.47‑million‑subscriber jump in June. The NCC also reported more than 5,000 fibre‑optic cable cuts nationwide in the first half of 2026, a disruption that degrades network quality and may push customers to switch networks regardless of the operator’s actual performance. With smaller players losing ground or becoming hard to assess, consumers face fewer credible alternatives when prices rise or service deteriorates, reducing competitive pressure on operators to improve affordability, quality, and customer service. You may want to monitor your provider’s performance, check for fibre‑cut alerts in your area, and consider alternatives if you experience persistent issues.
