Nigeria has formally objected to former Senegalese President Macky Sall’s bid to become the United Nations Secretary-General, opposing a move to have him adopted as the African Union’s consensus candidate. In a Note Verbale, Nigeria’s Embassy in Ethiopia stated the nomination was "procedurally incorrect" and violated established AU diplomatic norms, stressing its reservation is about process, not the individual or Senegal.

The core of Nigeria’s objection is the abandonment of the long-standing continental rotation principle for the UN Secretary-General position. Abuja argues it is currently the turn of South America and the Caribbean—a region Africa itself recognizes as its sixth—and that pushing a candidate now jeopardizes the AU’s strategic standing. Nigeria also expressed concern over the rushed, secretive 24-hour "silence procedure" used by Burundi (which initiated the bid) and the lack of scrutiny by the AU’s Ministerial Candidature Committee.

The AU process was contentious: 20 of 55 member states objected or sought a deadline extension, while Senegal distanced itself from the initiative. Without clear continental backing, Sall’s candidacy faces significant hurdles, as AU endorsement is a major geopolitical asset in the UN selection. Candidates must nominate by April 1 for April dialogues. This diplomatic clash highlights tension between procedural adherence and political maneuvering within African multilateral institutions, with Nigeria positioning itself as a defender of rule-based order.
