Nigeria places 10 states on high Ebola alert after East Africa outbreak

NCDC places FCT, Lagos, Rivers, Kano, Enugu, Borno, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba, and Adamawa on heightened Ebola surveillance following Bundibugyo virus outbreak in East and Central Africa. Advisory issued May 27 activates emergency response nationwide with no confirmed cases in Nigeria yet.

High-risk areas identified due to international airports, seaports, and border corridors. Uganda and DRC report over 1,000 suspected cases with 24.6% fatality rate. Critical concern: No approved vaccine or treatment exists for Bundibugyo strain, which differs from more common Zaire strain targeted by existing vaccines.

Health workers advised not to wait for bleeding symptoms—may resemble malaria or Lassa initially. Lagos State assures residents biosecurity systems remain operational following successful 2014 containment. Nigerians urged to maintain hygiene, avoid misinformation, and report suspected symptoms immediately as surveillance intensifies across all entry points.
