Nigeria's security forces recorded significant results in the third quarter of 2026, reflecting a shift toward intelligence-led, whole-of-society operations. The Armed Forces of Nigeria carried out 7,062 operations nationwide, neutralising 1,487 terrorists and insurgents, arresting 354 suspects and rescuing 777 kidnapped victims. The Nigeria Police Force reported 1,334 arrests and 383 rescues through intelligence-led work, recovering 175 firearms and over 3,790 rounds of ammunition. The Department of State Services disrupted arms-trafficking and terrorism networks, while the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons destroyed 1,419 illicit weapons on 30 July, bringing total destructions since 2022 to over 19,000; the Nigeria Customs Service handed over 399 intercepted firearms and hundreds of firearm components to the Centre in August. The NDLEA conducted 2,298 drug-targeted operations, arrested 3,705 suspects, secured 471 convictions, seized nearly 54,000 kg of illicit drugs and froze accounts holding more than ₦9.8 billion linked to cartels. NEMA provided flood relief to 24,625 households (about 147,750 people), the Federal Fire Service responded to 426 incidents, saved 585 lives and protected property valued at roughly ₦108 billion, and the FRSC intensified highway enforcement and emergency rescue. In the information space, Defence Headquarters issued 137 press releases and countered 13 misinformation items, the NDLEA issued 27 statements and 36 broadcast engagements, and the FRSC also tackled false narratives affecting its work.
These outcomes matter because they show that no single institution can secure Nigeria alone. Effective security now depends on coordination among the military, police, intelligence, border agencies, financial intelligence units, emergency services and citizens. By dismantling criminal networks, rescuing hostages and preventing illicit arms and drugs from circulating, security agencies directly protect lives, livelihoods and national resources. The emphasis on strategic communication and community engagement builds public trust, which is essential for early warning and timely intervention. Climate-related emergency responses also prove that disaster preparedness is an investment in national resilience, not just humanitarian aid.
