Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya are Africa’s top business process outsourcing destinations according to US consultancy Ataraxis, with South Africa #5 globally, Nigeria #6, and Kenya #11 out of 193 countries. The ranking highlights a shift from Asia to Africa for customer service, AI training, content moderation, telemarketing, data entry, and back-office work, driven by English proficiency, competitive labour costs, and growing talent pools.

For Nigerians, this signals expanding job opportunities in the BPO sector, especially for youth seeking roles in AI data work, digital marketing, and customer support. Companies like Teleperformance and Sama already operate large centres in Nairobi, and similar expansion could follow in Nigeria. However, labour groups warn of concerns over pay and working conditions, particularly in AI and content moderation roles. The US Federal Communications Commission’s March 4 proposal to require foreign-based customer care workers serving Americans to demonstrate proficiency in American-standard English could further boost demand for English‑speaking African workers if adopted.

If you’re considering a BPO career, focus on strengthening English communication skills, explore openings with established providers, and research workplace conditions before accepting offers. Monitor FCC developments—should the rule pass, English‑proficient African workers may gain a competitive edge. Upskilling in AI training, data annotation, or digital marketing can also increase your value in this growing market.
