Today, August 24, the decisive week of UNCCD COP17 began in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, shifting to high-level ministerial dialogues to finalize land restoration and drought solutions before the conference ends on August 28. Nigeria's delegation of at least 60 federal and state officials is actively pushing for a legally binding drought protocol and increased climate finance to tackle the country's severe land degradation crisis.

The stakes are high for Nigeria: 23.41% of its total land area—equating to 21.07 million hectares—is recorded as degraded, with authorities noting over half of rangelands and grazing routes damaged. This degradation has fueled decades of farmer-herder conflicts across communities, threatening livelihoods and national security. As UNCCD Executive Secretary Yasmine Fouad stressed, restoring land is not just environmental but a development and resilience priority, especially as drought intensifies in vulnerable regions like the Sahel and northern Nigeria.

Today's Finance Day focuses on mobilizing public and private investment for land restoration and drought resilience, spotlighting rangelands—which cover over 50% of Earth's land surface but are half-degraded. Key discussions include land rights for pastoralists, sustainable livestock value chains, and payment for ecosystem services. Upcoming thematic days cover water security (August 25), land rights and community impacts including displacement (August 26), and regenerative agriculture for food systems (August 27). With speaking slots strictly limited to three minutes and microphones auto-cutting, negotiators race to finalize an Action Agenda. Will Nigeria secure the finance and policy tools needed to reverse degradation, strengthen land-water ties, and ease rural tensions through investable solutions?
