Nigeria Wins AFCON Third Place
Nigeria defeated Egypt 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out to claim third place in the Africa Cup of Nations after a 0-0 draw. Ademola Lookman scored the winning penalty, following a goalless match in Casablanca. This victory comes after Nigeria's disappointment of losing shoot-outs that cost them chances to compete at the 2026 World Cup and in the 2025 AFCON final. The Super Eagles have now maintained a perfect record in third place AFCON matches, with seven previous play-off victories. The match saw several changes to the teams that started semi-final losses to Senegal and hosts Morocco, with captain Mohamed Salah starting for Egypt and attackers Victor Osimhen and Lookman on the bench for Nigeria.
