Nigerian airlines cancel planned shutdown, opt for talks after minister's plea
Domestic airline operators under the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have halted their planned nationwide shutdown originally set for Monday, April 20, 2026, following an emergency meeting on Friday, April 17, and an appeal by Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo. The association said the action is temporarily called off to allow dialogue, with a stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
AON had threatened to suspend operations due to the steep rise in Jet A1 fuel costs, which have jumped from about ₦900 to over ₦3,000 per litre, straining airline finances. Operators also cited mounting pressure from service providers demanding upfront payments, which they say worsens their financial burden and urged authorities to stop this practice while talks proceed.
While acknowledging the minister’s intervention, AON warned that the suspension depends on improved industry conditions and that its next move will hinge on the outcome of the negotiations. The group urged authorities to ensure airlines are not subjected to disruptions or undue pressure during the discussion period.
Will you adjust travel plans pending the April 22 meeting outcome, or wait for clearer signals on flight stability and potential fare changes linked to fuel costs?
