The Nigerian Army has dismissed allegations of poor welfare, inadequate pay, and lack of equipment made by a former lance corporal, Rotimi Olamilekan, who was discharged from service. In an official statement, Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, labelled the claims false and necessary to correct to avoid public misinformation.

The Army clarified that Olamilekan, known as 'Soja Boi,' was not dismissed for speaking out but for 'persistent and grave acts of indiscipline,' including violations of the Armed Forces Social Media Policy. Unauthorised media appearances and commercialising military identity are clear breaches of regulations. The service operates a transparent salary system based on rank and service years, with additional allowances for uniforms, rations, and operational duties paid directly to personnel.

Regarding equipment, the Army stated it is solely responsible for providing uniforms, kits, arms, ammunition, and protective gear like bulletproof vests and helmets through established logistics channels. The claim that soldiers must purchase their own equipment is 'entirely false.'

This incident highlights the strict disciplinary code governing military personnel's public conduct. The Army asserts its commitment to troop welfare while maintaining that grievances should be addressed through official channels, not unauthorised social media broadcasts.

Given the conflicting narratives, how do you verify information about institutional welfare from current or former service members?
