Nigerian bishop shot dead in Johannesburg home, NICASA calls for justice

Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, a Nigerian cleric from Ekiti State, was shot dead at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg, on Friday, September 10, 2026. Two unidentified individuals gained access to his home and fired more than seven bullets, according to the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA). The association’s national president, Rev Frank Onyekwelu, confirmed the killing and said NICASA has notified the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg and that a murder case has been opened at the Jeppe Police Station.

The incident has shaken the Nigerian community in South Africa, highlighting safety concerns for nationals living abroad. Onyekwelu described the act as a horrific and senseless loss that robbed a family of a loved one and the community of a precious life. He urged the South African Police Service and Nigerian diplomatic representatives to conduct a thorough probe and bring those responsible to justice.
