On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) All-Share Index slipped 0.50% to close at 245,418.37 points, down from 246,659.56 the previous day. Market capitalisation fell to N158.32 trillion from N159.12 trillion, wiping out roughly N800.7 billion in investor value. The decline was driven by double‑digit losses in two consumer goods heavyweights: Nestlé Nigeria fell 10% to N2,812.50 and BUA Foods dropped 10% to N845.10, while UAC Nigeria lost 7.75% to N184.45. Trading activity surged, with volume up 34.34% to 1.25 billion shares and turnover rising 139.80% to N118.18 billion.

The pullback ends a two‑session winning streak that had taken the index to a fresh record high earlier in the week. While Nestlé, BUA Foods and UACN weighed on the Consumer Goods Index (down 5.04%), other counters such as Cadbury Nigeria, Unilever Nigeria and NASCON Allied Industries hit their 10% daily gain limits, lifting the sector’s gainers. Banking and insurance stocks posted gains of 1.51% and 1.64% respectively, showing the decline was concentrated in a few large caps rather than a broad‑based sell‑off.

For investors, the session highlights how profit‑taking in a few bellwether stocks can move the whole index despite underlying strength elsewhere. Those holding the affected consumer goods names may want to review their exposure, while the broader market’s year‑to‑date gains (+57.71% ASI, +59.31% market cap) suggest the dip may be a short‑term correction. No immediate action is required unless you hold the specific losers; consider setting alerts for any further moves in these stocks.
