Nigerian governors across Lagos, Kebbi, Rivers, Kaduna, Imo and Abia states, alongside President Bola Tinubu and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, marked the 2026 Democracy Day by urging citizens to embrace unity, peace, patriotism and democratic values. Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the day celebrates "the enduring spirit of a people who chose democracy and stood firm in its defence," honouring MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola and other democracy heroes. Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris called for renewed patience, prayers, patriotism and law‑abiding conduct, describing democracy as a journey needing collective effort. Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara stressed democracy as Nigeria’s strongest path to unity, progress and prosperity, while Kaduna Governor Uba Sani warned against anti‑democratic tendencies and the romanticisation of military rule. Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma urged faith in democratic institutions, and Abia Governor Alex Otti urged vigilance against electoral malpractice. President Tinubu praised 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, defended his economic and security reforms, and encouraged young Nigerians to remain and contribute. SGF George Akume said democracy is "worth defending" and called for stronger institutions and respect for every vote. The commemoration also featured peaceful #EndBadGovernance protests in Lagos, where activists demanded action on insecurity, unemployment and the rising cost of living, with placards calling for the release of kidnapping victims and an end to anti‑people policies; human rights lawyer Femi Falana and rapper Falz joined the demonstration. June 12 marks the annulled 1993 presidential election widely believed to have been won by MKO Abiola, a date moved to Democracy Day in 2018 to honour the struggle for democracy.
