Nigerian military says US troop withdrawal is routine adjustment, not end of security partnership
Nigerian military spokesperson Major General Samaila Uba stated on Tuesday that the reported withdrawal of about 200 US troops from Nigeria does not signal a breakdown in bilateral security cooperation. He described the drawdown as a routine adjustment tied to specific operational objectives, emphasizing that key aspects of the partnership—including intelligence sharing, military training, and information sharing—remain intact.
Uba, speaking at a National Counter Terrorism Centre briefing, said the Nigeria-US defense relationship continues to be "strong, enduring, and mutually beneficial." He clarified that while US troop levels are adjusting, primary responsibility for defending Nigeria rests with Nigerian security forces, with foreign partnerships intended to enhance local capabilities. The spokesperson noted that the cooperation has produced valuable results in combating terrorism and transnational threats.
He urged journalists and the public not to interpret routine mission-specific adjustments in foreign military presence as evidence of collapsing national defense capability. The deployment began in early February 2024 following a mutual agreement after US strikes on suspected ISIS fighters, with troops later participating in combat operations that killed a top ISWAP commander in northeast Nigeria.
