Nigerian security forces report killing 1,597 terrorists, rescuing 1,516 kidnapping victims in first-half 2026 operations
Nigerian military and security agencies recorded significant gains in the first half of 2026, killing 1,597 terrorists and insurgents and rescuing 1,516 kidnapped victims across 14,221 coordinated land, air and maritime operations nationwide. Defence Headquarters spokesperson Samaila Uba (represented by Kabiru Ali, Nigerian Air Force group captain) announced these figures Thursday at the National Counter Terrorism Centre briefing in Abuja, noting recovery of 451 firearms, 16,726 ammunition rounds and 161 IEDs. Operations targeted terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and oil theft across Borno, Yobe, Taraba, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Plateau, Benue, Niger, Kaduna, Kwara and Oyo states.
Additional agency successes included: Police dismantling criminal networks and rescuing a woman with twin children; NDLEA seizing drugs worth ₦480 billion in Nigeria's largest meth lab bust across Ogun-Lagos; NSCDC shutting down illegal arms factories; Customs generating ₦3.35 trillion revenue while intercepting ₦24.33 billion in illicit drugs; EFCC securing 915 convictions for financial crimes including former ministers; and NAPTIP rescuing over 1,300 trafficking victims. The military noted 132 insurgents surrendered due to sustained pressure, while acknowledging persistent threats including the recent abduction of 30+ students and teachers in Oyo State.
While these numbers reflect intensified security efforts, ongoing threats like banditry and kidnapping-for-ransom persist in areas such as Abuja and the Abuja-Kaduna corridor.
