The Nigerian equities market fell for a second straight session on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with the All-Share Index dropping 1.05% to 242,223.10 points, erasing about N1.67 trillion in market capitalisation. This builds on Tuesday’s N1.88 trillion loss, bringing the two-day decline to N3.55 trillion and pushing the ASI down 5,476.68 points from Monday’s high of 247,699.78. Market breadth showed 11 stocks advancing against 44 decliners, an improvement from Tuesday’s 4-to-62 split. Heavyweights like BUA Cement (-10% to N278.10), Nestlé (-6.51% to N2,800), Nigerian Breweries (-9.76% to N74.00) and Transcorp (-5.57% to N33.05) led the losers, while Champion Breweries (+9.90% to N11.10) and VFD Group (+9.52% to N11.50) topped the gainers. Sectorally, the Industrial Index fell 3.10%, Insurance 3.07%, Consumer Goods 2.09%, Banking 0.53%, and Oil & Gas just 0.20%. Trading volume slipped 29% to 534.45 million shares, with turnover down 20% to N22.28 billion, suggesting reduced participation after aggressive repositioning ahead of the Dangote Refinery IPO subscription window opening September 14. Despite the pullback, the ASI remains up 55.66% year-to-date, and Nigeria’s reclassification to Frontier Market by FTSE Russell takes effect September 21, splitting attention between the IPO and index‑eligibility flows. Investors now appear more selective as the subscription date approaches, with Sterling Financial dominating volume at 78.11 million shares and Nestlé leading by value at N3.20 billion. Will you hold through the volatility ahead of the IPO, rebalance toward sectors showing resilience, or wait for clearer direction after the September 21 market reclassification?
