Nigeria's Aviation Sector Soars as Lagos Airport Records Double-Digit Growth
Nigeria has become Africa's second-largest domestic aviation market, FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku revealed at the ACI Africa Regional Conference in Luanda. She highlighted that Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, achieved an 11.8% increase in air traffic movements in 2025, placing it among Africa's fastest-growing airports. In cargo operations, Lagos recorded a 34.4% growth—the highest rise in the top 10 African cargo airports. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, also ranked in the top 10 for domestic passenger traffic.
Kuku stressed that these statistics demonstrate Nigeria's expanding strategic importance as a key aviation, logistics, and commercial hub on the continent. This performance mirrors broader African trends of increasing passenger demand and cargo throughput, reinforcing airports as gateways to opportunity.
To sustain this momentum, Nigeria will host the next ACI Africa conference in Abuja from September 19 to 25, 2026. Themed 'Next-Gen Airports: Driving Performance and Resilience,' the event will focus on strategies for investment, operational efficiency, and technology-driven airport systems. Kuku affirmed that Nigeria is not just hosting but actively shaping the future of African air connectivity.
For everyday Nigerians, this aviation boom could mean more flight options, cargo services, and job prospects. Will you consider a career in aviation or logistics, invest in related businesses, or adjust your travel plans to benefit from improved connectivity?
