Nigeria's power outages worsen as gas supply to plants drops below 43%
Nigeria's Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed power outages nationwide stem from severe gas supply shortages to thermal plants. Average generation fell to 4,300 megawatts, far below capacity, due to only 692 million standard cubic feet of gas daily supplied against the 1,629.75 mmscf needed. This 43% shortfall forces load shedding across the grid. Outages began after maintenance by NNPC and Seplat Energy disrupted gas deliveries. Thermal plants, providing 70% of power, remain critically constrained.
