Nigeria's refined petroleum product exports rose to $3.94 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 148% from $1.59 billion in Q2 2025 and 66.2% higher than the $2.37 billion recorded in Q1 2026, according to Nairametrics' analysis of the Central Bank of Nigeria's Balance of Payments. The growth reflects expanding domestic refining activity, led by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which processed 52.6 million barrels of crude during the quarter—about 78% of the 68.1 million barrels offered by local producers.

In volume terms, Nigeria's seaborne petroleum product exports averaged 350,000 barrels per day in Q2 2026, contributing to total seaborne shipments of 561,000 b/d. Europe received about 130,000 b/d, African markets nearly 120,000 b/d, and Asia and Oceania around 110,000 b/d. The rise in export earnings coincides with a sharp drop in the petrol import bill, which fell to N87.40 billion in Q1 2026 from N2.27 trillion in the same period of 2025.

What does this mean for Nigerians? Stronger refining output can reduce fuel shortages, stabilize prices, and increase government revenue from royalties and taxes. With the Dangote refinery operating at near capacity, opportunities are emerging in downstream investments, logistics, and skilled employment. Will you consider investing in or supporting local refining ventures, or advocate for policies that channel these export gains into broader economic diversification and social development?
