The World Bank reports that revenue allocations to Nigeria’s state governments rose by 93% in real terms between 2023 and 2025, driven by the removal of the fuel subsidy. The increase was disclosed in the October 2026 Nigeria Development Update. While the surge gives states more fiscal space, the Bank warned that higher revenues must translate into better living standards and poverty reduction through efficient spending and investment in human capital. World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis, stressed that strengthening spending accountability and service delivery is essential for public resources to improve Nigerians’ lives. The Bank urged states to prioritize transparency, cut waste, and channel funds into education, health, and skills training. For citizens, the question is whether their state governments will use the windfall to improve roads, schools, and clinics—or absorb it through inefficiency. Will you demand clearer budget reporting from your local government, or track how the extra funds are being spent in your community?
