NiMet issues flash flood alert for July 1-10 across 27 states including Lagos - prepare now

NiMet has issued a flash flood risk alert effective July 1 through July 10, 2026 covering Lagos State and 26 other states including Rivers, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa in the south and Sokoto, Borno, Kano, Kaduna and Taraba in the north, citing saturated soils from persistent June rainfall that can't absorb additional peak-season rains.

The agency warns this could trigger localized flooding causing traffic gridlock and road closures on major highways, disrupt power and telecommunications services, damage bridges and drainage infrastructure, waterlog farmlands leading to crop losses, and create stagnant water pools that increase risks of cholera and other waterborne diseases. Poor visibility during heavy rain also endangers motorists and aviation operations.

To minimize impact, NiMet urges residents to: actively follow NiMet's weather forecasts and flash flood advisories; regularly clear drains, gutters and waterways of refuse to ensure water flow; secure loose outdoor items like furniture and reinforce vulnerable structures; and absolutely avoid walking or driving through floodwaters. SEMA, NEMA, community leaders and relevant stakeholders should immediately intensify flood preparedness and response measures.
