NNPCL ignores NA summons on ₦210T oil revenue, evading legislative oversight
NNPCL's top management has repeatedly ignored summons from National Assembly committees to account for ₦210 trillion in oil revenue between 2017 and 2023, as flagged by the Auditor-General of the Federation. The Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources Upstream deputy chairman walked out of a meeting after NNPCL officials failed to appear for crude oil theft hearings.
This evasion of legislative oversight undermines constitutional checks and balances (Sections 88-89), enables potential corruption in Nigeria's strategic oil sector, and sets a dangerous precedent for other MDAs. With ₦103 trillion in accrued expenses and ₦107 trillion (~$117 billion) in receivables unaccounted for, and Nigeria borrowing abroad while blocking leakages, this directly impacts citizens living below poverty line.
The Ned Nwoko-led committee's November 2025 interim report found $22B, $81B and $200B missing revenues due to weak oversight. Cash calls claims of ₦103 trillion in 2023 contradict abolished arrangements since 2016 and NNPC's ₦24 trillion revenue over five years. Citizens must demand accountability as this negates Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and mortgages national resources.
