Nokia launches AI-RAN in Africa to boost telecom networks with NVIDIA GPUs

Nokia launched its commercial AI-RAN platform on July 15, 2026, aiming to add AI processing to existing telecom infrastructure across Africa. The technology combines Nokia's anyRAN software with NVIDIA's Aerial GPU hardware to enable AI workloads like inference and training on the network while maintaining 4G and 5G traffic. Nokia says it works with major operator groups including Airtel, Orange, Vodacom, Safaricom, and Maroc Telecom.

This matters because Africa's telecom market is estimated at $66 billion and projected to reach $90.3 billion by 2030. Nokia argues AI-RAN can improve spectral efficiency up to 2.5-fold, automate network operations to reduce energy consumption, and create new enterprise revenue streams from sectors like mining, ports, and manufacturing. However, the platform adds significant cost—industry estimates suggest GPU-accelerated nodes can exceed $100,000 each with high power demands—making rollout challenging in a market where operators still prioritize basic connectivity expansion and face currency risks.

Trials with African operators are expected as early as Q1 2027, followed by announcements at Mobile World Congress 2027 and potential commercialization in 2028. Nokia's position is challenged by rivals like Huawei and Ericsson, which already offer AI-RAN solutions without GPUs and control larger shares of the RAN market. For Nigerians, the key question is whether AI-RAN will deliver tangible improvements in network speed, reliability, and cost for everyday users, or if high expenses will limit its benefits to only major cities and enterprise clients.
