North Korea announced the successful ground test of an upgraded solid-fuel missile engine with 2,500 kN thrust—up from 1,970 kN in September—using composite carbon fiber materials. State media KCNA says Kim Jong Un observed the test, part of a five-year plan to boost strategic strike capabilities. Solid-fuel technology enables quicker deployment, greater mobility, and easier storage, making missiles harder to detect and intercept.

Why this matters: The engine’s claimed capability to reach the US represents a significant step in North Korea’s ICBM program. However, analysts are skeptical; key data like combustion duration remain undisclosed, and no full ICBM launch has followed previous tests, hinting at delays or refinement. Some suspect Russian technical assistance amid the Ukraine war.

For Nigeria, rising global missile capabilities raise regional security concerns, especially regarding potential technology transfer to extremist groups in the Sahel. Nigeria’s own defense modernization, including missile defense systems, competes with urgent economic needs like infrastructure and poverty reduction. Global instability also threatens oil markets, impacting Nigeria’s revenue.

Should Nigeria accelerate missile defense development, or prioritize economic stability and diplomacy? How can West Africa prevent advanced weapons tech from reaching non-state actors?
