The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has labeled as false and misleading a viral infographic that claims the Federal Government introduced a new vehicle tax on all registered vehicles effective July 1, 2026. The graphic, which bears no identifiable author and uses the Federal Government logo to appear authentic, directs owners of private, commercial and corporate vehicles to pay the levy online or at approved banks and agencies, without stating the tax rate. In a statement on Sunday, Special Adviser to the NRS chairman and spokesperson Dare Adekanmbi said the Federal Government has not introduced any fresh vehicle tax as claimed. He emphasized that the message did not originate from the NRS or any government agency and urged the public to disregard the fabricated information. The NRS advises citizens to rely only on verified official channels for accurate information about tax policies and activities. This clarification matters because acting on the false claim could lead to unnecessary payments, confusion, and erosion of public trust in government communications. Vehicle owners should ignore the infographic and seek updates through the NRS website or its verified social media platforms to avoid misinformation and potential financial loss.
