NRS Launch Marks Strategic Tax Modernization Beyond Name Change
Nigeria's Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) officially transitioned to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) in January 2026, representing a strategic overhaul of tax administration beyond mere rebranding. Executive Chairman Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi emphasized this marks a "defining moment in Nigeria's fiscal history," shifting focus to a structured, technology-based, and citizen-centered approach. The reforms include the Nigeria Revenue Service Act replacing the FIRS Act, consolidating tax laws into a clearer system, and establishing the Joint Revenue Board for improved federal-state cooperation. Key initiatives include streamlined property registration, enhanced electronic invoicing for real-time monitoring, and simplified compliance pathways for small businesses and informal sector participants. Atoyebi stressed the goal is to transform taxpayers from revenue sources into partners, prioritizing transparency, fairness, and trust. The reforms aim to increase participation without discouraging entrepreneurship, though specific implementation timelines and costs remain pending.
