NSA Nuhu Ribadu met a high‑level US delegation led by newly confirmed Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia in Abuja on July 14, 2026. The talks focused on reviewing the Nigeria‑US Joint Working Group’s progress and reinforcing the long‑standing security partnership between the two countries. Ribadu said the meeting strengthened the enduring Nigeria‑US partnership, reviewed joint initiatives and restated a shared commitment to deeper dialogue, cooperation and mutual security priorities.

The engagement comes as Nigeria’s security situation deteriorates, with terrorists, bandits and criminal groups carrying out deadly attacks across many states. Kidnappings remain rampant in parts of the North‑West and North‑East, while communities in the North‑Central and South‑East face persistent violence that has killed innocent civilians.

The talks signal renewed US support amid rising insecurity, but they also highlight the urgency for Nigerians to assess how worsening insecurity affects daily life, livelihoods and safety, and to consider what local and federal actions are needed to restore peace.
