Obi-Kwankwaso Alliance Sparks Debate Over 2027 Viability

Speculation about a potential 2027 presidential ticket pairing Peter Obi (ADC) and Rabiu Kwankwaso intensified after their March 22 Sallah meeting in Kano, where Kwankwaso—who recently defected from NNPP to ADC—was greeted by large crowds. Both were 2023 presidential candidates (Obi for Labour Party, Kwankwaso for NNPP), and the alliance could combine Obi’s integrity appeal with Kwankwaso’s northern political structure.

Nigerians’ reactions are mixed. Some, like civil servant Lilian Ijeoma and politics broadcaster Owigo Okolo, call it a ‘game-changer’ and vow to vote if it happens. Social media users note the pair’s complementary strengths but caution that internal party hierarchy and lack of economic plans could derail it. As @Henry Uch noted, ‘Alliances in Nigerian politics often collapse before elections.’

If the ADC officially endorses an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, it would present the most credible challenge yet to the ruling APC’s 2027 re-election bid, merging regional and demographic support bases. However, the coalition’s stability depends on managing internal power-sharing and moving beyond photo ops to concrete policy blueprints.

Will this alliance overcome Nigeria’s history of fragile political mergers and offer a unified front for change, or will it fracture over personality clashes? Voters should watch for ADC’s consolidation in coming months and demand transparency on governance plans before committing support.
