Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate now with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called on Nigerians to rise in defence of the country’s democracy, warning against moves towards a one-party system. In a post on his official X handle earlier today, Obi said members of ADC and other pro-democracy Nigerians are united in opposing any attempt to weaken the nation’s multi-party structure.

Obi emphasized that safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic system is essential for unity, peace, and national security. He stated: “We, members and leaders of the ADC, alongside other well-meaning Nigerians and lovers of democracy, insist that our democracy must not be undermined. We reject any move towards a one-party system and call on all Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security to join us in defending our democracy.”

Cautioning that eroding political plurality would harm democratic growth and stability, Obi’s appeal comes amid reports of political realignments and defections, including recent moves by figures like Kwankwaso to ADC. This highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.

Will you actively participate in civil society, vote in upcoming elections, or use your voice to support multi-party democracy, or remain passive as political space narrows?
