Oracle cut about 21,000 jobs in its 2026 fiscal year, trimming its global workforce by 13% from 162,000 to 141,000 employees as of May 31, 2026, according to its annual report. The company spent $1.84 billion on severance and exit costs, far above the $374 million spent the prior year, citing management changes, product shifts, strategic shifts, acquisitions and performance issues as drivers. The layoffs follow a broader trend: 196 technology firms have laid off nearly 120,000 workers this year amid AI-driven disruption, per Layoffs.fyi. Despite signing large data‑center deals with OpenAI and Meta to compete with Amazon and Microsoft, Oracle said it is funding the expansion through cash burn and debt, planning $70 billion of capital expenditure and raising another $40 billion in debt and equity, including a $20 billion stock offering. Its shares are down roughly 10% year‑to‑date.

For Nigerian tech professionals, the move signals a tighter global tech job market as AI reshapes hiring. Those eyeing overseas roles or relying on Oracle‑related contracts may face stiffer competition. Consider strengthening skills in AI, cloud platforms or alternative vendors, and monitor regional hiring trends to adapt your career plans.
