Over 1,000 West African migrants rescued after dangerous Atlantic crossing attempt

Over 1,000 migrants attempting the perilous Atlantic route from West Africa to Europe's Canary Islands were rescued in late August after departing The Gambia. The 1,046 people in seven boats faced extreme dehydration, unconsciousness, bone fractures, extreme fatigue, and skin, gastric and respiratory infections, with many witnessing loved ones die during the crossing, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

This matters to Nigerians because many consider similar dangerous journeys seeking better opportunities abroad, often underestimating the extreme risks involved. The rescued group included 134 women (one pregnant) and 88 minors, mostly from Senegal and The Gambia but also Mali, Guinea, Ivory Coast and other West African nations, highlighting this as a regional crisis affecting multiple nationalities.
