Peter Obi claims APC clears corrupt defectors, criticizes Nigeria's party system

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), told Channels Television's Politics Today that politicians accused of corruption often appear to be cleared of wrongdoing once they defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He said Nigeria's political parties lack clear ideologies and that politics is driven by personal interests rather than principles. Obi accused the APC-led government of deliberately weakening opposition parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and formerly the Labour Party (LP), claiming the president's wishes precede judicial independence. He pledged that, if elected president, he would protect opposition parties from government or regulatory interference. Obi also dismissed the idea that endorsements from state governors guarantee President Bola Tinubu's victory in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that governors' support does not always reflect the views of their constituents. Voters should consider how party defections affect accountability and assess the strength of opposition parties when deciding their vote in the 2027 election.
