Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi condemned Nigeria's National Assembly for removing certificate forgery, age falsification, and false declarations as grounds for challenging election results in tribunals. Obi called this move a direct contradiction to the Constitution of Nigeria (1999, as amended), questioning the integrity of leaders bequeathing the country to future generations. He highlighted the inconsistency between lawmakers proposing ₦10 million fines and two-year prison sentences for dual party membership while weakening electoral integrity. "A nation cannot rise above the integrity of its leaders," Obi stated, emphasizing that laws must defend truth, character, competence, and accountability. "Submitting false documents or falsifying age to gain public office is among the most serious offenses in any democracy," he added, warning that such actions undermine ethical leadership and weaken democracy.
