Peter Obi Urges Tinubu to Boost Security After Benue, Plateau Attacks

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, urged President Bola Tinubu to strengthen national security after deadly attacks in Benue and Plateau States on July 13, 2026. He said at least 16 people were killed in the Otukpo‑Nobi community of Benue State, while nine members of a single family, including a two‑month‑old baby, died in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. Obi described the violence as a continued threat to lives, property and livelihoods, stressing that every Nigerian life is sacred and that such tragedies should not be treated as normal.

He called for a security strategy built on intelligence gathering, rapid response and accountability, demanding that those responsible be identified, arrested and prosecuted. Obi warned against routine condemnations after each attack and urged a proactive security architecture that prevents future violence. He also extended condolences to the bereaved families, the governments and residents of both states, and expressed hope that affected communities would recover.
