Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a stark warning to Nigerian political leaders, criticizing their focus on the 2027 elections amid escalating violence across the country. In a statement on X, Obi highlighted that over 1,000 Nigerians have been killed and thousands more abducted in the first two months of 2026 alone, with attacks occurring in states including Zamfara, Kwara, Ondo, Kebbi, Edo, Benue, Adamawa, and Plateau. He described the situation as worse than in countries officially at war, lamenting the disparity between political strategizing for 2027 and the urgent need to address the bloodshed. Obi criticized political actors for prioritizing party structures, zoning formulas, and campaign strategies over citizen safety, calling the approach inhumane. He urged a shift in national priorities, emphasizing that leadership must focus on safeguarding human life rather than election preparations. "History will not remember how many strategies we perfected for 2027; it will remember whether we acted when Nigerians were dying. We must choose Nigerian lives over politics. We must put Nigerians first," Obi stated.
