PETROAN orders nationwide meter checks after NMDPRA flags under-dispensing fears
PETROAN has directed its members across Nigeria to immediately inspect their fuel dispensing meters following concerns raised by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) about under-dispensing at retail outlets. PETROAN National President Billy Gillis-Harry announced the directive on Wednesday during Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, stating that an emergency meeting with the National Executive Council was held Tuesday night and lasted until about 10 pm. He said PETROAN circulated a message urging members to check their meters as quickly as possible, noting that several outlets had already begun inspections. Gillis-Harry explained that meters can become faulty over time due to usage, potentially causing either under-dispensing or over-dispensing, and shared that he had personally lost money in his own retail business because a faulty meter dispensed more fuel than customers paid for. He assured motorists that PETROAN members will ensure they sell exactly one litre for one litre displayed on the pump, and urged customers to pay attention to the meter reading while fueling, request receipts, and know their vehicle’s tank capacity to verify the amount received. PETROAN also said it collaborates with the Weights and Measures Division of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the NMDPRA to maintain meter accuracy and functionality. The NMDPRA has warned that stations found short-changing consumers face sanctions, including possible revocation of operating licences, and PETROAN confirmed it is taking the regulator’s concerns seriously and has started working with members to address any faults.
