Police Officer Threatens to Kill People Filming Operations, Faces Discipline
Nigeria Police Force condemns ASP Newton Isokpehi who recorded threatening TikTok video saying 'Any day I'm on duty with my rifle, let somebody video me... Let that Oga that gave you an order to video us, he'll come and bury you.' The officer has apologized and deleted the video, but disciplinary action has commenced with him summoned to Anambra State Police Command Headquarters.
Police spokesperson Anthony Placid called the conduct 'unacceptable, unprofessional, and inconsistent with ethics and standards' of the NPF. The force emphasized that public recording of officers performing duties remains lawful as long as it doesn't obstruct operations or compromise safety.
Inspector General Olatunji Disu maintains recording police activities is 'a legitimate tool for public accountability and transparency' that shouldn't attract harassment from police. This incident occurs amid ongoing reform efforts aimed at improving professionalism and public trust in policing nationwide.
With public trust already fragile, what should citizens do when they encounter officers resisting lawful recording during operations? Should citizens report such incidents to authorities or seek legal support immediately?
