Samson Itodo, executive director of Yiaga Africa, accuses Nigerian politicians of intentionally creating confusion around the 2027 general election to manipulate outcomes. He argues that confusion overstretches accountability institutions and overwhelms citizens, lowering standards for credible elections by the time voters realize the manipulation. The controversy over Electoral Act amendments, which began in 2023, is avoidable and prioritizes politicians' self-serving agendas over public interest. Itodo criticizes delays in legalizing real-time electronic transmission of results, noting this technology has been used since 2015. He warns that politicians fear e-transmission exposes rigging schemes. The current timetable for the February 20, 2027 presidential election conflicts with Ramadan and Lent, creating a constitutional time trap. Elections must conclude by April 29, 2027, but the narrow window between January 29 and February 7 risks chaos, especially with potential runoffs or reruns. Itodo calls for INEC clarity and legislative action to prevent surrendering elections to confusion and compressed timelines.
