Pope Leo XIV has "no fear" of US President Donald Trump's criticism as he continues his African tour, defending his calls for peace in the Middle East. The pontiff, who came under fire from Trump for opposing the Iran conflict, said he has "a moral duty to speak out against war" and doesn't "fear" the Trump administration.

Trump had called Leo "weak" and criticized his anti-war stance, stating "Pope Leo said things that are wrong" about Iran. The US president doubled down on his criticism, saying there was "nothing to apologise for" and claiming the pontiff was "toying with a country that wants a nuclear weapon."

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned Trump's criticism as "unacceptable," saying "it is right and normal for (Leo) to call for peace and to condemn all forms of war." The Pope emphasized he's "not a politician" but follows the Gospel's call to be "blessed are the peacemakers."

Currently in Algeria, the Pope is visiting four African countries (Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea) over 11 days. In Algiers, he paid tribute to victims of Algeria's independence war and called for "forgiveness" at the Algerian Martyrs Memorial. The pontiff's trip holds personal significance as Algeria was home to Saint Augustine, whose spiritual legacy permeates Leo's pontificate.

How should religious leaders balance speaking truth to power while maintaining diplomatic relations in today's polarized global climate?
