Pope Leo XIV visits Lampedusa, urges safe migration paths amid crackdown

Pope Leo XIV visited the Italian island of Lampedusa on July 4, 2026, the United States’ 250th independence anniversary, to highlight the plight of migrants crossing the Central Mediterranean. He began at the cemetery where unidentified migrants are buried in numbered graves, then visited the ‘Door of Europe’ monument and blessed a plaque honouring his predecessor, Pope Francis. Lampedusa, 90 kilometres off Tunisia and home to about 6,000 people, has long been a gateway for Africans seeking Europe. In 2013 over 360 died in its worst shipwreck, and dozens more have drowned since. The International Organization for Migration says roughly 1,330 people died or went missing on the route last year, while more than 14,000 arrived in Italy during the first half of 2026, nearly 60 % landing in Lampedusa. The pope criticised recent EU rules that widen detention powers and create offshore deportation centres, and called the United States’ treatment of immigrants inhumane, urging moderation in US public discourse and advocating safe, legal pathways for migration.
