PSN backs State Police Bill after House passage, cites grassroots security boost

The Parliament Support Network (PSN) endorsed the State Police Bill passed by Nigeria's House of Representatives earlier today, arguing it will significantly strengthen grassroots security nationwide. According to PSN Executive Director Dr. Moses Onoja, the bill's approval with 288 votes in favor and only 4 opposed shows growing consensus for decentralized policing to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and communal conflicts.

Onoja stated state police would improve intelligence gathering, enable faster responses to security threats and give law enforcement better understanding of local communities' unique challenges. He emphasized the current centralized police structure is overwhelmed by rising insecurity across the federation.

The PSN leader urged the Senate, state Houses of Assembly and other stakeholders to support the bill's adoption into the Constitution, noting while it isn't an instant fix for all security issues, it represents a critical structural reform for improving security governance and public safety. Onoja called on Nigerians to back practical, decentralized solutions to the country's safety challenges.
