REA leads Nigeria's renewable energy revolution with $750m DARES program
Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is spearheading Nigeria's decentralized renewable energy transformation, moving from decades of corruption to transparent digital monitoring under Dr. Abba Aliyu's leadership. The agency has deployed advanced IoT platforms that track power generation and community connections in real-time, eliminating ghost projects.
Local solar manufacturing capacity has skyrocketed from 120MW to 300MW, with panels now exported to neighboring countries like Ghana. The DARES program, a $750 million initiative targeting 17.5 million Nigerians, has mobilized $1.1 billion in private investments through results-based financing.
Over 1,000 mini-grids are currently being developed nationwide, including 48 interconnected systems adding 288MW of clean capacity. This directly supports CBN's $1 trillion economy goal by: unlocking agricultural value chains with solar-powered mills and cold storage; reducing MSME operating costs by replacing expensive fuel; and positioning Nigeria for cross-border electricity trade.
With the NERC expanding mini-grid capacity to 10MW, Nigeria has established one of Africa's most investor-friendly renewable energy frameworks being studied by Mozambique, Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. Does this energy transformation represent Nigeria's most viable path to economic diversification and regional energy dominance?
