Reno Omokri says N3,000 daily enough for average Nigerian to survive

Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s ambassador‑designate to Mexico, said on the Sunday Politics television programme that an average Nigerian can survive on ₦3,000 per day. He based this on a market visit with a journalist where they checked the prices of yam, rice, maize and fruits, concluding that amount covers a day’s needs. Omokri argued that poverty measurements must reflect each country’s economic reality, noting that the same ₦3,000 would be insufficient in the United States because of higher living costs.

He also addressed the World Bank’s global poverty benchmark of living on less than $2 a day, saying international standards should not be applied without considering local conditions. When asked if he disagreed with the World Bank’s measure, Omokri replied that the institution uses a global standard that has been applied worldwide.

The comment comes amid ongoing debate over Nigeria’s rising cost of living and fuel subsidy removal. Critics say the figure understates actual expenses, while supporters argue it highlights the need for context‑specific poverty lines.
