The House of Representatives passed a fresh amendment to the Electoral Act 2026, proposing N10 million fines or two years imprisonment for Nigerians holding membership in more than one political party. The legislation, sponsored by House Leader Julius Ihonvbere, voids dual membership and mandates cessation of recognition for both parties involved. Supporters argue it prevents fraudulent representation, while critics, including SDP leader Prince Adewole Adebayo, call it unconstitutional under Section 40 of Nigeria's 1999 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of association. Analysts suggest the move aims to protect the APC-led government from internal defections amid economic hardship and security challenges. The amendment awaits presidential assent.
