Rufai Oseni calls Tinubu’s ICPC probe into PFIPC a ‘joke,’ doubts any outcome
Arise Television’s The Morning Show anchor Rufai Oseni dismissed President Bola Tinubu’s directive for the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) and its self‑acclaimed Director‑General, Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, as “the greatest joke of the century.” Speaking on the programme on Wednesday, Oseni argued that the Presidency’s initial statement on the controversy had already exonerated the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and that directing the ICPC to investigate after such a statement undermines public confidence in the process. He warned that it would be difficult for the anti‑graft agency to conduct an investigation that could implicate individuals close to the government, noting that the Presidency’s body language had already signalled where it stands. Oseni added that, as long as officials remain politically aligned, “nothing will happen to you” and “your sins are forgiven.” He urged that everyone mentioned in the affair should face the investigation panel, stressing that no one is being declared guilty, but that the perception of a biased probe erodes trust in anti‑corruption efforts. The commentary raises concerns about political interference in anti‑corruption work and its implications for accountability in Nigeria.
